Once we were all children. This is an absolute truth for all human beings, regardless of race or class. Children can wander for hours, putting their hands and feet under running water, digging in a sand pit and dreaming about the fairy world in the clouds. They inhabit the ‘Utopia of Childhood’, the home of free play of the imagination, of deep emotion and experimentation. In the world of adulthood with all its harsh reality, the ‘Utopia of Childhood’ fades out.

Is it possible to evoke the ‘Utopia of Childhood’? Philosopher Graham Gordon said, ‘Art is to enhance our understanding of the world and human beings have the ability to manipulate their experience imaginatively’[1]. If so, the creative work of the imagination must be the one of the more significant vehicles through which to re-encounter our lost ‘Utopia of Childhood’.

When creativity, philosophy and human wisdom are integrated, art, including architecture, will be born. And it will form a city, and a city produces its culture and that generates civilization. But civilization also creates never-ending human greed that is used to justify constant war and environmental destruction. Most of us feel deeply depressed when we face this reality. But, I believe, the realization of the fact once we were all children will be a strong force for change with true compassion.

The reason for my making art and children’s books is also about childhood. The process of art making brings me back to my lost childhood. It provides me an extraordinary sense of pleasure and bliss. I hope my work can help take your mind to your childhood as well.

子供時代のユートピア                                                                                                                                                   2005/April

私達はかつてみな子供だった。——これはどんな人種や経済階層の人間にとっても、絶対的な真理です。子供というのは何時間も手足を流れる水に浸しておいたり、砂を掘り続けたり、雲の上の妖精達の世界を夢見て過ごす事ができる不思議な生き物です。それは子供というものが、みな心の中にユートピアを持っているからだと思います。そこは自由な遊びの本拠地であり、真の深い感情、創造の力、あふれる好奇心が泉のように湧き出る場所なのです。しかしやがて子供は大人になるにつれ、多々な厳しい現実に直面してその幻想のように楽しかった心の場所、「子供時代のユートピア」は段々と消えてしまいます。

この「子供時代のユートピア」を再び、喚起する事は可能でしょうか？哲学者のグラハムゴードンは「芸術というのは、我々人間がより深く世界を理解するためのものである。人間はあらゆる体験を創造的に再構築し、アートへ転化する力を持っているのである」[1]と語っています。それなら、人間の創造した芸術作品こそ、我々の心の奥に封じられてしまった「子供時代のユートピア」へ導いてくれる「魔法の絨毯」に違いありません。

人間の英知と創造性と哲学が総合されたときに、絵画や彫刻が生まれ、建築が生まれ，そして都市が生まれ、文明が生まれ、歴史が生まれます。そして文明は様々な欲望をも生み、文明の名の下で私達人間は何百年も何千年も差別と殺戮、環境破壊をくりひろげてきました。おおくの人間はそうした現実に直面し、無力感に押しつぶされてしまいます。しかし、そんな時こそ我々は心の中の「子供時代のユートピア」の存在を思いおこさなくてはいけません。人間はみな子供であった、という万人に共通する平等な体験の認識こそ、何かを変える原動力になると私は信じています。夢をみるように、昔だれもが、子供の時に内包していたユートピアが心に蘇る時、人間は他者を（自然と言う環境も含め）真に理解できるのではないでしょうか。それは大きな平和のための共通言語なのだと思います。

私が絵本やアート作品を作るのも、アートという魔術を使って私自身の子供時代に出会うためのものといっていいでしょう。こうして何かを作る過程において、私は自分の子供時代へ再帰することができるのです。それは言葉につくせない、大変な喜びを私にもたらしてくれます。願わくば、これを鑑賞して下さる皆さんの心の中の子供時代へ、ほんの一時でも戻るお手伝いができるなら、大変嬉しいことだと思います。
