Between the Lines, Among Everyday
Nominated for the Paul Selzer Prize, University of Melbourne
String, Flower, Plants, everyday materials, Domain House, 2022
This installation is a work in progress, process based that explores my ongoing interest in 'line' and the ideas and form derived from the everyday. The plants were collected from my everyday walk and by visiting friends. They were all alive but slowly drying and decaying.
Creating lines with string is my favourite artistic form. Indeed what I am most excited about is seeing in-between the lines, called "gyo-kan' in Japanese. The term is usually used in literature, to understand the nuance and feelings that aren’t written in words. In an art context, between the lines is negative space; the space between the lines.
The flowers and plants were collected from my everyday walk and by visiting friends. They were all alive but slowly drying and decaying. The installation was created on-site through communication and negotiation with space and time. It is a process of the act of fully understanding and embracing the impermanent negative space – the ‘true’ space.
